Question: Referring to my former question, you told me to dive deep in my heart. In order to do so, I concentrate on the heart centre repeating the name of God and calling for you to guide me. I feel you are there, so please help me to dispel and remove the agitation of the mind, for without your help I cannot do it.

Swamiji: To control one’s mind completely is more difficult than to become the Prime Minister of Israel. Trying to remove the wandering of the mind is like trying to catch the air in your fist. Regular and daily practice and dispassion from what is temporary and transient are the two important factors to stop the modifications of the mind. In Patanjali’s Yoga Sutras it is written: “Abhyasa vairagyabhyam tat nirodhah,” meaning that with practice and dispassion the modifications of the mind can be stopped.

Dispassion implies detachment from all that is temporal and changing – all objects, all situations and all worldly relationships. Dispassion does not mean renunciation; it means detachment.

The physical body and mind are also changing. How can you give them up? What is needed is to be inwardly detached from the body-mind. The body is like a vehicle, the soul is the driver, and the Spirit is the owner of the vehicle. Body and mind are the means. But most people treat them as the goal and serve them. If you are travelling in a car and you say, “I am the car,” you are stupid.

We are not only attached with the body, but even with the name of the body. If someone says X is ignorant, he is agitated.

Question: In the state of nirvikalpa samadhi, does one become unconscious or remain conscious of external sounds? Is nirvikalpa samadhi related with the sahasrara chakra?

Swamiji: Nirvikalpa samadhi is the state of no-mind. In this state, all states of mind disappear. All the trinities of experience disappear and only Experiencing is present.

The universe is composed of time, space, and qualities. In nirvikalpa samadhi, there is no experience of time, space, or qualities.

There is no mention of the chakras in Patanjali's Yoga, which is considered the most scientific and psychological system to control the mind. The chakras are mentioned in the tantric books.

Question: Since my teacher died, I try to find him inside. How do I know what is my teacher’s true guidance?

Swamiji: Guru never dies. The Guru guides the disciples even after he/she has left the physical body.

Question: What it the best way to please God?

Swamiji: To please God one has to follow the moral values. Selfless service to the poor and needy performed in the name of God is also one part of the sadhana to please God.

God is always pleased. Bliss is the essential quality of God. God is Sat-Chit-Ananda. Absolute Existence, Absolute Consciousness, and Absolute Bliss.

Question: Do you have any advice for practicing japa while working on a computer?

Swamiji: In Kali Yuga, japa is considered the easiest way of remembering God. In Sat Yuga, tapas or austerity was predominant. In Traiti and Dwapa Yugas dhyan or meditation was predominant. Man's mind is the greatest computer. Whatever work you are doing, you should do it with full concentration.

Question: What steps should a devotee take in his sadhana to receive the continuous grace of his Guru? How should one pray to his Guru and seek the right path during turbulent times?

Swamiji: Your Guruji must know about your circumstances and he/she must be doing everything to help you, even though you don’t know it. You should serve your Guruji in all respects, insofar as you are able to do so. Prayer and meditation are very useful for getting rid of mental tension.

Question: I received mantra diksha from you eight years ago. Nowadays I have no more professional duties and few family duties. I am living on my own in a quiet place in the forest and I want to dedicate my days to sadhana. How should I organize my days? Is it better to stay apart or should I get involved in actions to help people in need? And is there any means to help to overcome a lack of energy and tamasic tendencies?

Swamiji: Along with diksha some disciplines are to be followed by the disciple. You should sit in prayer and meditation daily and regularly at least twice every day—in the early morning and late evening. You should also discharge your social and familial duties, study spiritual books, and serve the poor and needy according to your capacity. Eat sattvic food and read the biographies of saints and sages—these will give you physical energy as well as mental energy to regularly practice your spiritual sadhana. And eat only that quantity of food which you can digest easily. Good physical health also helps the seeker in his spiritual sadhana
